The sore throat treat and test service enables a patient* to be assessed by an accredited pharmacist. This may involve the pharmacist taking a swab of your throat if appropriate, to help identify Strep A infection. This is an NHS service and saves the need for a GP appointment.

Our pharmacist will conduct a consultation with you to determine the cause of your sore throat using structured questions and perhaps a swab tests. Our pharmacist can provide advice on steps to take if your sore throat is determined to be a viral infection, which antibiotics cannot treat. Following a consultation and assessment by the pharmacist, we can supply paracetamol and/or ibuprofen if required, or an antibiotic if the throat swab indicates Strep A.
It is important to know that 9 out of 10 sore throat cases are caused by viral infections and therefore cannot be treated with antibiotics.
